A Weekend Lost at a Cost by Huntsville Carpet Cleaning

carpet cleaner rental Huntsville AL
Picture

You work hard all week and look forward to the weekend. For millions of people in America the weekends have always been a time to relax and enjoy family and friends. Barbeque combined with and baseball make for a good time for all.

BUT there's that grass! It sometimes seems as though it is staring at you. My grass often gets so high so quickly that I think it has a grudge against me. There are times during the spring and summer months that mowing my yard actually acts as a fertilizer and causes the grass to grow with lightning speed.

Then, sometime during the week, you look down. You aren’t happy with the condition of the carpet. No, its fibers aren't growing like your grass but it seems as though the dirt is deepening and expanding. So then you make a risky, costly,  and time consuming decision. The decision? The decision to rent a do-it-yourself carpet cleaning machine from your local grocery store. That’s right… you are going to clean your own carpet. Your goal this weekend is to uncover a nice, fresh and clean carpet and enjoy a healthier home (of course you won't do it until you've conquered the grass).

Friday evening arrives. Off you go to your grocery store and you find yourself in front of a bunch of do-it-yourself cleaning machines and the various cleaning solutions available. There are products to put on the carpet before you clean it. There are products to put in the machine with the water. There are other types of products for all kinds of spots and stains. Still others for pet odors. You aren’t sure which ones you will need, so you grab a selection of them and take them to the front of the store to pay.

At the register, while paying for the 2 days of rental for the carpet cleaning machine, you discover the total cost with all those cleaning products included is about what you would spend on TWO trips to your favorite Japanese Steak House (a family of 4). But you aren’t deterred!  You are going to clean your carpet yourself (you have developed super-hero syndrome!) Nothing will stop you (even though you really could get the whole house cleaned by Kleaneasy for a mere $97).

So you go home with all your cleaning stuff and get started. After you mow in the morning, cleaning the carpet takes all the rest of your Saturday and, sad to say, a large part of your Sunday. It’s backbreaking work. You are constantly filling the machine, dumping the dirty water, re-filling the solution tank and on and on and on for hours! You had no idea what sweating was really like. Yet… it looks pretty good when you are done. The bad part is it takes a few days to dry and you yell at the kids to not walk on the carpet. Maybe you thought they could float over it?

BUT a strange and unexpected phenomenon occurs within two weeks. The carpet starts to look worse than before it was cleaned. Uh oh… what happened? Well, you have just been introduced to what is called "wicking." Wicking is the deeply embedded dirt rising from the carpet base and into the carpet fibers. This dirt becomes more apparent with each passing day. This occurs because the rental machine does not have enough vacuum power to lift all the dirty cleaning-solution laced water from the base of the carpet. Remember, water is heavy and requires strong vacuum power to remove it efficiently.

You made a natural and honest mistake based on a common assumption. The assumption? rental machines can do as good a job as a professional carpet cleaner. So, you didn’t call your carpet cleaning pro Kleaneasy Carpet and Floor Cleaning)! You know, those who have the training and the very best equipment and cleaning solutions to get the job done right.

Don’t ruin another weekend. Do the smart thing and hire a professional to do what he does best: Clean your carpet.

Thank you for reading this post. If you want to help me spread the word about safe cleaning methods please share this post and leave a comment.
 Thanks again! Tony

Battling Garbage Can Odor

How to get rid of garbage can odor
There’s nothing too exciting about garbage cans, except how you feel if you pull a full trash bag out and it bursts and spews all kinds of undesirables all over the kitchen floor.
If you have garbage, such as limp lettuce, fermenting flounder, greasy goat cheese, and much more, you will have odors from it. Odors naturally occur from bacteria, which is what grows quickly on organic material. And then you have mold adding to the issue. All this fermenting in a dark, damp playground known as your garbage can.
Even if you have a secure trash can lid, the odors have a mind of their own and an evil intent to escape.
There are several things you can do to limit the effect of garbage can odors.

Take out the trash
It may seem simplistic, but most of us wait too long to take out the trash. A smell garbage can inside is terrible – the one outside waiting to be hauled away isn’t much better, but at least it is outside. Make it a practice to take out the trash before the bag is full.

Use quality scented bags
By quality, we mean bags that have a thicker mil rating, as they won’t break as easy. Yes, they cost more and use more plastic. Look at keeping the mil for your trash bag at 2 or above. The scented bags really do a great job hiding, not removing, odors. They mask bad odors and give you more time between taking out the trash before you start to notice odors.

Use baking soda
Baking soda is a typical household fixture. By sprinkling baking soda in the bottom of your garbage can and even in the bag, it helps to limit the odors caused by bacteria. It does this by absorbing odors instead of them being released into the air you breathe.

Give it a hosing
Like all things, garbage cans need to be cleaned. You might say, “I use bags!” but that doesn’t matter. Odors build up no matter what you do, and a good cleaning with baking soda or other cleaning products, and hosing or rinsing out the can, will help keep lingering odors at bay.

And like all things, quality cleaning of the surfaces in your home are better performed by the pros. Do the right thing, call your favorite cleaning company when you need help. After all, it pays to call a pro!

Prevention of Seasonal Allergies

The prevention of seasonal allergies is a top priority for millions of people around the world. In many areas of the United States seasonal allergies begin in February and often last until the early summer (and in many cases even through fall).

Tree pollination begins the earliest but is quickly followed by grass pollination as soon as spring begins. Ragweed, a plant that grows wild almost everywhere, tends to develop in late summer and early fall. Mild winter temperatures can lead to earlier pollination of many plants. Further, a rainy spring can also promote advanced plant growth and can cause an increase in mold. The advancement of mold often causes symptoms to last well into the fall.

Ways to Prevent Seasonal Allergies

As noted, spring means flowers blooming and trees exploding with pollen. If you are among those unfortunate people that are impacted by seasonal allergies, it also means sneezing, congestion, a runny nose and other annoying symptoms. Seasonal allergies (AKA Hay Fever) — makes you feel absolutely miserable. But before you throw out all of your flowers and greenery try the following instead.

Minimize your exposure to allergy-inducing activators.
  • As much as possible take advantage of staying indoors on dry, windy days. The opportune time to go outside is after a thorough rain that has helped to clear pollen from the air.
  • Enlist help with lawn mowing, weed pulling and other gardening chores that stir up allergens. Hire or enlist someone to do these things for you. If you just enjoy doing them yourself then wear an allergy mask and do this type work early in the morning when dew is still visible.
  • Change clothes after you have been outside even if only for a few minutes and shower to rinse pollen from your skin and hair.
  • Don't hang laundry outside — pollen can stick to sheets and towels.

Shouldn't You Replace Carpets with Hardwood Flooring?

As a professional carpet and floor cleaner I can add a lot of insights into this question.

It is absolutely true that hardwood floors do not "capture" dust mites and other allergy-inducing materials. But this doesn't mean you must go to the huge expense of ripping out your carpets and replacing them with hardwoods.

Why?

The following list of reasons should bring some clarity to the subject.
  1. Dust isn't captured by hardwoods like it is by carpeting and area rugs. That is very true. BUT dust does lay on it and is easily stirred into the air by simply walking over it or sweeping it. This means that as you move around the house you are stirring the allergens around and into the air. Therefore you must constantly sweep and/or swiffer the floors. On the other hand, carpet serves as a filter in a similar way that the filter for your heating and air conditioning system does. Yes, carpets "capture" allergens but this is actually a good thing because you are not stirring it around as you walk over it (because it is "captured"). So, if you are an allergy sufferer then rather than replace carpets with expensive hardwoods, simply purchase a high-quality, HEPA type vacuum cleaner and vacuum two ot three times a week. Frequent vacuuming prevents allergens from settling deeper into the carpet fibers. Vacuuming dust is much easier than sweeping and captures it into a bag or bagless container rather than sweeping it into a dust pan. I recommend a heavier vacuum cleaner for allergy sufferers. Heavier vacuum cleaners, like a Kirby, gets the roller brush deeper into the carpet thereby removing embedded dust. Lighter vacuums simply glide across the top of the carpet and merely remove surface dirt. Yes, Kirby's are more expensive (but not as expensive as replacing carpets with hardwoods by any stretch) but you can often can find them used on internet marketing sites like Facebook. Purchasing a new one is always the best choice but they are so well-made that even the used ones are often in excellent condition. Should you decide to purchase a Kirby, new or used, make sure you use the HEPA MICRON MAGIC BAGS. Just shop around. There are many great vacuums out there but you want a heavier one if you are an allergy sufferer.
  2. What's the first thing people do when they lay wood floors or buy a home with wood and tile floors throughout? Buy area rugs, right? Area rugs capture allergens in the same way as carpets do. So, they have not actually solved the allergy problem at all. I am often amazed at how many people call me for area rug cleaning (which is more expensive than cleaning wall-to-wall carpet) and have area rugs in literally every room of their home. Please do not misunderstand me. I love hardwood floors because they can be very beautiful. I have them in parts of my home. I also have area rugs in every room that has hardwoods. But my bedrooms and office are carpeted. My wife and I are both seasonal allergy sufferers. So, if you have area rugs, you are still capturing allergens.
  3. Since it is true that carpets capture allergens then it is also true that every other fabric does so as well. This includes curtains and draperies, mattresses, sofas, chairs, and every other piece of fabric in your home. Unless you replace every piece of furniture and window treatment with plastic or wood you still have the same allergy-capturing issue. And if you do, you will need to be constantly wiping and dusting to keep those allergens from swirling around. Makes perfect sense, doesn't it?

Best Advice for Seasonal Allergy Prevention

My best advice for preventing and minimizing seasonal allergies is to read and implement the bulleted list above.
Next, give full consideration to the pros and cons of replacing carpeting with hardwoods. It may be the right choice for you but then again, I may have given you a better option. However, should you prefer hardwoods then minimize the number of areas rugs OR at the very least vacuum them two to three times per week with the type of vacuum cleaner recommended above.

It's obvious that you will not replace all window treatments and furnishing with plastic or wood. This means that all fabrics need to be vacuumed regularly and thoroughly with attachment tools that come with higher quality vacuum systems like the Kirby. This practice will reduce allergens dramatically.

Lastly, have carpets, areas rugs, furnishings, mattresses and all other fabricked materials professionally cleaned once a year at a minimum. This is the best way to remove all allergens and helps to prevent seasonal allergies and other bacteria-induced illnesses.

As you can see from this post, I am all about saving money. There are ways to prevent seasonal allergies that do not require going to the extreme expense or measures. Do your homework and make the best decision for you and your family. If I can help you in any way, don't hesitate to call me at 256-886-9100.

Keeping Our Kids Safe and Healthy

As a parent you are always concerned about the health and safety of your children. From that first moment the nurse or doctor placed that precious little one into your arms you knew that you had a big responsibility. BUT, you didn't care. It was a responsibility you gladly accepted.

keeping our kids safe and healthy
Even though they can try your patience at times, you love these little blessings with all your heart and soul. That love causes you to want to protect them at any and all costs.

Keeping your children safe and healthy is such a dominant thought that you consider almost every aspects of their lives. You go to great lengths to keep your home "child-safe."

For example:

You Consider the Physical Aspects of Your Home

  • Every toy is carefully considered and examined for safety before you purchase it
  • Safety latches are attached to cabinet doors and drawers
  • Electrical sockets are covered with outlet plugs
  • Anchors are secured to prevent furniture, TVs and ranges from tipping over and harming your child
  • Corner and edge bumpers are added to prevent serious injuries from falls against sharp edges on walls, furniture, and fireplaces
  • Knob covers that prevent a child from easily opening doors are secured and attached
  • Cordless window coverings are installed to lower strangulation risks
These are but a few of the lengths you go to to keep your children safe.

You Also Consider the Medical Needs and Risks

keeping children safe and healthy
  • You will likely talk with other parents about illnesses and prescriptions. You will want to know what they did when their child had a certain illness and how their child reacted to prescribed medications
  • You will make sure you have all the necessary over-the-counter medicines readily-available
  • You will place all medications out of sight and reach of your child
  • You will have thermometers, bandages, hydrogen-peroxide, alcohol, saline solution, and MANY other medical items on hand
  • Your pediatrician's number will be stored in you phone and written on a card that is attached to the refrigerator
You Consider the Safety of Household Cleaning Products

  • You carefully read the ingredients of cleaning products
  • You read informative articles such as this one
  • You watch videos like this one ...

All of the above information is simply the tip of the iceberg of the lengths you will go to in order to keep your precious little one(s) safe and healthy. Beyond this, you will thoroughly check-out playgrounds, pre-schools, daycares, and other such places.

This is VERY normal and any parent who doesn't consider these items, at least to some degree, is taking unnecessary risks related to their child's health and safety.

We all want safe home, learning, and play environments for our kids. I trust that this post serves as a catalyst for even further research you conduct into keeping your children safe and healthy.

If I can serve your carpet, upholstery, or floor cleaning needs ... please call me today!

Do You Consider Your Service Company's Education?

Picture

We all begin our formal education at kindergarten (or there about). The importance of education is drilled into us from our earliest days on this earth. We all assume that without a proper education we will be ill-positioned to make our best contributions to the world. I certainly agree.

I think that you would agree with me that education matters in many, if not most, areas of life. This is true of the people and companies that I consider hiring to perform services for me. I, like you, have needed services performed in my home many times over the years. I have needed plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and other services. I always want to know the education and training the company provides its employees and if the technicians are certified. My home is too large of an investment to allow uneducated and "self-taught" techs to service it. Honestly, I don't want a self-taught anybody in my home working on my investments.

Will I Have to Pay More?

Will I have to pay a little more for properly-educated and trained technicians? Probably. But think about it this way. If you need extensive surgery are you concerned how much the surgeon's bill will be? Not likely. Why? Because you know that he or she has gotten the proper education and training to perform that surgery. Your health and life are too valuable to be concerned with price. When it comes to our health we are rarely concerned with nickels and dimes. Shouldn't it be the same with our home and household investments?

I say YES!

So, when you call a service company your first question shouldn't be, "How much do you do charge for ...?" A FAR better question would be, "Are you technicians certified?"

At Kleaneasy we have extensive training and experience. I have attended many courses on cleaning techniques and different fabric types. Cleaning textile materials requires an informed and educated person or extensive damage can result.

Give me a call today to discuss your cleaning needs. My price will not be the lowest. But it will be fair and comes with a full guarantee and a 30-day warranty.

Thanks,

Tony Guthrie

Do You Consider a Service Company's Reputation?

Picture
You may not ever really think about it but people really should ask about the reputation of a service business they are considering hiring or contracting with. This is true of all businesses including carpet and floor cleaning businesses.

Why is a company's reputation important? Because YOU and your home/office are very important. You want to make sure that you can trust the company you hire. So, you want to know if they have a positive reputation in your city or town.

At Kleaneasy, we enjoy a reputation that is second to none. We have many positive reviews on Google and other internet sources.

Following are just a few of our positive testimonials:

"Wonderful work and extremely professional! Would not hesitate to use Tony again. Have tried several carpet cleaning services throughout the years and Tony has been the absolute best."

"I was so impressed when I called to make my appointment that Mr. Guthrie, the owner answered the phone himself! What a wonderful experience it was the day my carpets were cleaned. First of all Mr. Guthrie was extremely punctual, even early as he finished his earlier job and telephoned to see if it was ok to come then. I've been a homeowner for 40+ years and have used many carpet cleaning companies over the years. KleanEasy is unquestionably the BEST ever. Mr. Guthrie is punctual and professional with just the perfect blend of personable. He is extremely organized and thorough and my carpet looked better than new! I will be using KleanEasy from now on when I need carpet or hardwood cleaning. I can't say enough positive! Give him a try yourself, you will not be disappointed."

"We had Tony come and clean our floors when we moved back in June. He did a wonderful job, has exceptional service standards and competitive prices! So much so that after forgetting over and over, nearly 3 months later, I'm still (and finally) leaving him a review! Don't bother using anyone else!"

It's so true, our customers make us who we are. They see firsthand how dedicated we ae to excellent service and they readily refer us and leave outstanding reviews.

We at Kleaneasy will ALWAYS work hard to go the extra mile and provide the most outstanding cleaning experience ever.

We hope that YOU will join our happy customer family too (and soon!).

What Do You Really Know About a Carpet and Floor Cleaner?

Picture
One thing is for sure ... there are a LOT of so-called professional service providers in every industry. The word “professional” is one of the most loosely thrown around words in the world. One can get a set of tools, a truck and a few lessons from Uncle Chuck and Presto! he’s a professional.

Unfortunately this is also true of the carpet and floor cleaning field. There are thousands of independent “cleaners” across America. The 0ver-whelming majority are self-taught and have never darkened the door of a training or certification class. They simply purchased a used carpet extractor, picked up a few cleaning chemicals at a local janitorial supply store, practiced on their own house, and then started marketing to unsuspecting consumers. Their mentality is simply this: “Hey, it’s carpet cleaning! What’s the big deal?”

But seriously, who would you really want in your home cleaning your fine carpets, rugs, and upholstery?

There are five factors that come into play when considering a professional carpet and floor cleaner.
  1. Reputation - Does the company have a good reputation with its client base? Do current and past customer say glowing things about the company and the service they provide? Do they show up in a clean, lettered van? Are the technicians uniformed and clean-cut or are they wearing faded jeans and a t-shirt?
  2. Education - There are LOTS of professional training and certification schools for the carpet cleaning industry. Most cleaners stay far away from them. Every customer should ask a potential cleaner, “Are you certified by the IICRC (the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification)?” At Kleaneasy we are certified in floor cleaning by the IICRC and have taken additional courses throughout the industry. We are educated in every aspect of carpet, rugs, tile, and upholstery cleaning. We are trained in recognizing all types of carpet fibers and the best and safest ways to clean them. We are educated in the hundreds of different types of cleaning solutions to include pre-treatments, spotters, extraction detergents, low-moisture products, rinsing agents, and carpet and fiber protectors. Ask the technician at your door, “What is a surfactant?” If he can’t answer, tell him “thanks but no thanks.” We are not only trained but we also STILL attend refresher courses and study the industry’s trade publications.
  3. Experience - It is never a good idea to hire someone new to the industry (a newby) to clean your carpets and floors. Newbies should never go it alone. There is simply too much risk of doing more harm than good in a customer’s home or business. They should seek out mentorship and training from experienced and certified cleaners in the industry. Kleaneasy began as an idea in 1983 when our owner, Tony Guthrie, was being mentored and trained by a seasoned cleaner. Since the 1980s Tony has served in the carpet and floor cleaning industry. Kleaneasy has decades of experience and there isn’t a cleaning situation we are unfamiliar with.
  4. Systems - Successful businesses utilize organizational, financial, technical, and procedural systems in order to provide customers with the best service possible. There is a system to everything we do at Kleaneasy. This means that we don’t “wing it.” Our mission is to provide our customers and clients with the most outstanding service experience ever. In order to accomplish the mission we have systems in place in every area of our company. Every customer receives the same, exact service from the way we answer the phone, to the way we enter and clean the home, to the way we follow-up and keep in touch.
  5. Guarantee - At Kleaneasy we guarantee that you will be pleased with our service. If for any reason you are not, we will rush back out and reclean the area of concern. If you are still not satisfied we will happily refund your money.

What Do You Really Know About a Carpet and Floor Cleaner? Hopefully you know a little more now.

Be Careful of the Lowest Price Offer

Picture

Hey, I understand that most of us want a great deal when it comes to paying for services like cleaning, painting, plumbing, lawn maintenance, etc. We all work hard for the money we earn and we want to stretch it as far as we can. I am the same way BUT ... the old adage “you get what you pay for” is quite true when it comes to purchasing services.
Let’s say you need the carpets in your living room, hallway, and three bedrooms professionally cleaned. You call around for “prices.” The first words out for your mouth when the business answers the phone is, “How much do you charge for ...?” Not a bad question BUT beware of thinking you hit the great offer when the quote is $99.

If they answer with such a low quote as $99 then your next question should be, “What does that include?” The answer may surprise you.

What should you expect from a professional carpet and floor cleaner?
  • A pre-inspection of the carpet with you
  • Pre-vacuuming to remove dry dirt
  • Pre-spot cleaning
  • Pre-treatment with a high-quality cleaning detergent
  • Hot water extraction with commercial grade extraction equipment
  • Certified cleaning technicians who are well-groomed and uniformed
  • After treatments (if necessary)
  • Post-inspection with you
  • 30-day spot and stain warranty
  • A fair and reasonable price

How can others offer such “low” prices?

There are only two possible explanations.
  1. They intend to run into your home with a cleaning wand and hose and extract with mostly hot water. They may use a cheap cleaner but for $99 they simply can’t afford the finest cleaners for your fine carpets and floors. They will be in and out rather quickly. You have invested a lot and you can’t afford to pay for low quality work. Your carpet “may” look clean initially but within a month it will appear dingy or even dirty again.
  2. They intend to bait and switch you. This means they will quote a low price to get the job but when they arrive will try to sell you a more expensive package again, because they can’t afford to stay in business for such low prices. This is the oldest trick in this industry.
The quote you receive should be inclusive of everything in the bullet list above. The price quoted for that service is what you should expect to pay. It should not change once the cleaning technician arrives. The only exception would be if you choose to take advantage of other offers you may find beneficial.

There is a big difference between this industry’s “rug-scrubbers” and professional carpet and floor cleaners. Choose wisely.

Tile and Grout Cleaning

Tile and Grout Cleaning
It's seems that the flooring craze is all about tile and grout in bathrooms and kitchens and hardwood everywhere else. People like the look of these floors and I have to agree that they are indeed beautiful. As a carpet and floor cleaning specialist I welcome this flooring "craze." Many carpet cleaning providers are bothered by the trend but I welcome it with open arms.

Some people think that keeping tile and grout clean is fairly easy. Unfortunately this is not the case. While these floors are not overly difficult to clean yourself, it is time-consuming and labor intensive.

Do it yourself tile and grout cleaning
Here's how to clean tile and grout yourself.

  • Sweep or vacuum to remove all dry debri
  • Secure a tile and grout brush (these can be hand-held or attached to a long pole like a broom pole.
  • Apply a detergent especially designed for tile and grout with a spray bottle or a pump up sprayer (follow label instructions). Please do not use household cleaners or bleach as they can actually damage the grout.
  • Manually scrub the tile and especially the grout lines with the brush. Dirty water should be evident as you scrub.
  • Work only in small sections because you don't want the soiled water to dry as you are working on another area.
  • Wipe, don't mop, the excess with a towel to absorb most of the dirt into the towel(s).
  • Damp mop with clean water until all dirt is removed.
  • Allow several hours to dry.
  • Typically some darker or dirty spots will show after it dries even after all your hard work. Time to clean those areas again.
tile and grout cleaning Huntsville Alabama
Of course, there IS a better way

Pet Odor? Baking Soda to the Rescue

Picture
Pet owners love their pets. This is as a true a statement as any. Countless people have pets OR plan to have one soon. Recently I was in a rescue shelter looking at the dogs and considering whether it was time to take one home. There were LOTS of people in the facility and each one was considering their future pet choices. Yes, many people love animals.

As you well know, having a pet requires loving, nurturing, feeding, and even cleaning the animal(s). Pets are sweet, special and loving. And, through no fault of their own, can create and leave odors in your home. But fear not, there is a simple fix for this. Typically pet odor resides in carpets, furnishings, pet beds, and area rugs.

BAKING SODA TO THE RESCUE
Grab some baking soda and sprinkle it generously over the area that seems to be the source of the pet odor.  Allow the baking soda to sit overnight (at least 24 hours). Then vacuum the baking soda up.

This usually solves the problem.

If any pet odor remains, repeat the process.

Most of the time this will eliminate any odors. If, however, you still smell a less-then-wonderful scent in your home, give me a call at 256-886-9100. I'd be happy to help.

I hope this post helps.
